1. PFD: The Key to Survival & Selection Standards
Thousands drown annually, mostly due to not wearing a PFD. The simple appearance of kayaks and canoes often creates a false sense of safety; however, paddlers are much more likely to enter the water than other boaters. Therefore, the absolute first rule of paddling is: Wear your PFD, and keep it properly fitted!
(Type III PFD)Recommended Type
Paddlers should choose a USCG-approved PFD. Type III is highly recommended as it is specifically designed for paddling activity, providing adequate buoyancy, torso protection, and warmth without restricting arm movement.
Flat Water Options
In flat, calm water and warm conditions, paddlers may opt for USCG-approved inflatable PFDs for enhanced comfort. Regardless of the type, keeping the PFD on the boat is not enough—it must be worn and secured.
2. Cold Water Protection and the 120 Rule
Cold water is a major, often unrecognized hazard. When paddling in water of 60°F (approx. 15.6°C) or lower, a wetsuit is required and a drysuit is recommended. Evaluating the combination of air and water temperature is equally critical, known as the “120 Rule”.
Correct Definition & Formula of the 120 Rule
Tair (°F) + Twater (°F) < 120°F
Protective gear (wetsuit or drysuit) is mandatory when the sum of temperatures is below 120°F.
Tair (°C) + Twater (°C) < 31.1°C
For metric users, the corresponding sum of Celsius temperatures is 31.1°C.
Physiological Reaction of Cold Water Shock:
Immersion in water below 50-60°F (10-15.6°C) triggers sudden “Cold Water Shock”. This response includes gasp reflex, hyperventilation, rapid heart rate, spike in blood pressure, and spatial disorientation. Without a PFD and proper thermal protection, loss of swimming ability or cardiac arrest can occur within minutes.

Environmental Hazards & River Features
(Wind & Waves):Wind & Waves
Even mild wind can quickly turn a calm lake into a challenge, blowing a craft off course or causing a capsize.
(Moving Water & Rapids):Moving Water & Rapids
Moving water exerts immense force. As speed doubles, the water’s power increases exponentially, easily pinning craft.
Low-head Dams
(Portage)。One of the most dangerous river hazards. They look non-threatening and are almost invisible from the low seating perspective of an upstream paddler until it is too late. The base creates a deadly recirculating current (hydraulic). Instructors must emphasize identification and portaging.
Strainers & Sweepers
Fallen trees, debris, or rocks that allow water to flow through but trap solid objects like boats or swimmers. The current pins victims against the obstacle, leading to entrapment. Paddlers must recognize and avoid them.
(Rules of the Road)3. Standard Rules of the Road
While paddlers may not need a license, they must follow basic international and local navigation rules:
Yield to Large Vessels
Power vessels and large ships have limited maneuverability in channels; paddlers must always give way.
Keep to the Right
In narrow channels or when meeting head-on, keep to the right side of the channel.
Be Visible
Use bright colors. At dawn, dusk, or night, a white light is legally required.
Avoid Channels
Stay close to shore and avoid lingering or fishing in high-traffic commercial channels.
